Assistant Professor
Dr. Starks is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Washington (UW). She received her undergraduate education in Communications at the UW in Seattle, Washington (1978-1982), her Masters in Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley (1987-1989) and her Ph.D. in Health Services Research from the UW School of Public Health (2001-2004). She joined the School of Medicine faculty in January 2005.
Dr. Starks' has conducted research on advance care planning, quality of life assessment, surrogate decision making, clinician-patient-family communication, and physician-assisted suicide. She uses a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods to examine both the processes and outcomes of health care systems. Her work will illuminate the context of how, when, and why palliative care consults are requested with the aim of improving the appropriateness and quality of care for hospitalized patients living with complex, life-limiting illness and their families.
